Last month, the Paytient team was in San Antonio for the Health Care Strategy & Market Development Conference (SHSMD). SHSMD is an annual conference put on by the American Hospital Association’s Society and is the nation’s premier conference for health care strategy professionals. We collected insights from our Vice President of Provider Partnerships, Andrew Harris, about his SHSMD experience.

What is SHSMD?

SHSMD is composed of hospital executives in the strategy and marketing arenas. The overall focus is finding ways to grow their health systems through go-to-market strategies. As our future continues to transform, it is a chance to energize and advance executives' thinking in a robust shared learning experience. SHSMD is for leaders looking to learn from and connect with fellow change drivers to inform, challenge, and validate thinking.

What was your overall reflection from the conference?

Less is more. With just over 400 people in attendance this year, the depth of discussions with colleagues and presenters was spectacular. Being surrounded by the top leaders in health care strategy allowed for great connections and even greater conversations about how to better foster innovation, community and patient engagement, strategic partnerships, and the future of health care.

What are your top takeaways from SHSMD?

  1. COVID has accelerated the need for innovation in healthcare, specifically for providers.
  2. I was very impressed with the approach of many vendors when it came to the digital experience for consumers.
  3. Christine Albert, Chief Marketing Officer at LCMC in New Orleans, had a great discussion on how they aim to improve the working experience for their employees at their health system as many are burned out across the country.
  4. Hospitals will continue to face pressure from insurers, employers, and consumers regarding the cost of care. A new conversation needs to start on transparency and payment models for consumers to increase access to care.
